What is Chess? What Makes it Popular Among Youth?

Games are a wonder of the 21st century. Be it indoor or outdoor games they lift your mood and make you happy whenever you are stressed or in tension. However, with the proliferation of digitalization, young youth prefer online games more. But that doesn’t mean indoor games are not played anymore.  In this write up we are going to talk about games, especially Chess that not only enhance your IQ but also develop habits of thinking, creativity, and mastering patience.

What is chess? What makes it popular among youth?

Chess is considered the most popular game among young youth. Two players are involved in playing this board game. It is also international chess or western chess.

Wilhelm Steinitz is known as the father of chess.

Chess is a game of abstract strategy with no hidden information. It is played on a chessboard that has 64 squares in an eight-by-eight grid. Each player begins with sixteen pieces: a king, a queen, two rooks, two bishops, two knights, and eight pawns. The player in charge of the white pieces moves first, followed by the player in charge of the black pieces. The goal of the game is to checkmate the opponent’s king, which means that the king is under immediate attack (in “check”) and has no way of escaping. A game can also end in a draw in a variety of ways.
Organized chess arose in the 19th century. It is governed internationally by FIDE ( International chess federation).
Wilhelm Steinitz was the first universally recognized World Chess Champion, claiming the title in 1886; Magnus Carlsen is the current World Champion. Since the game’s inception, a vast body of chess theory has emerged. Chess composition contains elements of art, and chess has influenced Western culture and art, as well as having connections with other fields such as mathematics, computer science, and psychology.
One of the early computer scientists’ goals was to build a chess-playing machine.

Rules of chess

The division of chess pieces are made into two different colored sets. The colored might not be white and black (e.g. the light set may be a yellowish or off-white color, and the dark set may be brown or red), they are always referred to as “white” and “black”. The name of the players in the two sets are White and Black. Each set includes sixteen pieces, including a king, a queen, two rooks, two bishops, two knights, and eight pawns. Chess sets come in a variety of styles; the Staunton pattern is preferred for competition.
The game is played on a square board with eight rows (called ranks) and eight columns (called columns) (called files). The 64 squares are referred to as light and dark by convention because their colors alternate.
The light square is placed in the right-hand corner closest to each player on the board. The phrase “queen on her own color” can help you remember the correct positions of the king and queen: the white queen starts on a light square, and the black queen starts on a dark square.
In competitive games, the organizers assign piece colors to players; in informal games, the colors are usually determined randomly, such as by a coin toss or by one player concealing a white pawn in one hand and a black pawn in the other and letting the opponent choose.
Each piece has its way of moving.
